The first project on my Handmade Challenge list is completed.
I have a number of lace and embroidered doylies which I collected over the years for some of my past creative work, so now seemed a good time to do something more with them. There are heaps of ideas on Pinterest so to set me off on the creative path again I've had a go at recreating these doylies into sweet little bowls.

I begin by collecting various shaped bowls and dishes, plus a bottle for the oblong shaped doylies, to use as moulds.

For my first doyley moulding session I keep it plain and simple. I've kept them white and used one small and one large mould. The moulds are placed upside down and covered with plastic wrap. The doylies are dipped into a mix of white craft glue and water; then placed onto the moulds, smoothed over and then left to dry.

The white lace doyley bowls look sweet but I do love colour so for the next lot of doylies I pulled out my coloured dyes. I have used these dyes in the past for dying materials I used in tassel making, plus fringing, braids, laces and even beaded fringing.

For moulds in this next lot I used a long, narrow oil bottle for the delicate oblong doyley, a drinking glass for the sweet small doyley and a rounded vase for a cotton and lace doyley. I wasn't sure how an embroidered doyley would turn out so there was only one way to find out.

Aaaand ... here is the finished work. I think they are rather sweet; and a great way to recycle or recreate old doylies.

The lace bowls will be perfect to use for potpourri, to store your trinkets and jewellery or serve some favourite chocolates. I think these will definitely be added to the Christmas gift list.

I'm happy to have made it through the first project of The Handmade Challenge. I hope you like what I've been able to recreate. There are three more projects for me to complete before the end of year -

  1. Framed pinboard, chalkboard or other - I have several gorgeous old vintage and vintage style frames just sitting there waiting for me to recreate them.
  2. String ball ornaments - This is another idea I found on Pinterest and I hope to make these in time to use as Christmas decorations.
  3. Canvas Art - this could be a tricky one for me but it's something I've been thinking about doing for years so I'm hoping I'll ideas flowing by the time I get to this project.

I haven't decided which of the above projects will be next but I'm looking forward to getting creative again.

I came across a lovely blog called My Handmade Adventure. The author is Karen, a Melbourne blogger, and her blog is about making things, discovering new crafty skills, and rejoicing in the skills of other talented people. Sounds like my kind of blog.

She set up The Handmade Challenge for 2015 at the start of this year but I thought I'd give it a go. The idea is to make a list of things you've been wanting to make and then make them before December 31st - originally it was 12 things but seeing we've past the half-way mark of 2015 Karen is happy to accept late comers to join in the challenge so I'll be looking at making 4 things.

Why am going to do this challenge?

I need a push-start to get me on the creative path again. During my time running EP Designs - a part-time, home based, decorative homewares business - I created and recreated numerous things and I really enjoyed being creative. It was also my 'me time' and 'think time'. But life happens, plus outside work commitments increased and I was also organising a makers market - My creative time came to a halt and I gradually brought EP Designs to a close.

So here is my Push Start list of 4 items I'm aiming to complete before December 31st ...

  1. Doyley bowls and tealight holders. I have a number of lace doylies that I collected over the years for some of my past work so now is a good time to do something more with them. I found the idea on Pinterest.
  2. Framed pinboard or chalkboard - I have several gorgeous old vintage and vintage style frames just sitting there waiting for me to recreate them ... a nice gift for someone?
  3. String ball ornaments - This is another idea I came across on Pinterest and I hope to make these in time to use as Christmas decorations.
  4. Canvas Art - this could be a tricky one for me but it's something I've been thinking about doing for years so now is the time.... right?

I'm actually aiming/hoping to finish before Christmas because I'll need most of those items beforehand.

If you're interested in joining in, even at this late stage, pop over to Karen's post about the challenge and leave a comment. We can then encourage each other, comment and share each creation as they are completed.

Happy Creating

There’s creativity with coffee. I’m a coffee lover and find myself pondering and brainstorming many ideas over a cup of good, real coffee. When I call it 'real' coffee I'm actually referring to espresso or percolated, not instant coffee. And my coffee has to be just right - it needs to be freshly prepared and enjoyed immediately; it needs to be strong, with perfect temperature and crema; and it needs to be served with a warm, friendly smile (if I'm at a cafe).  I'm then ready to ponder, make notes, plan, think, design, brainstorm, get inspired, and so on.

Creativity With Coffee, On Coffee and After Coffee.

Creativity With Coffee, On Coffee and After Coffee.

There is an art to making coffee and if you are a coffee enthusiast chances are you are always seeking out the best coffees in town. Baristas who take pride in their work are like artists. They are aiming for perfection. The perfect coffee comes about from a combination of coffee grinder, coffee machine, coffee beans blend, and of course, the barista. The barista practises countless hours in the art of coffee-making just as an artist or crafter would practice and experiment on their craft.

Thank goodness for great coffee and talented baristas who will also add some creative flair on the silky smooth cappuccino froth - it makes me feel special.
